South Florida has many different habitats. Magrove estuaries and interior wetlands are home to many wading birds and waterbirds such as purple gallinules and coots. Miles of sandy beaches and mudflats exposed at low tide provide a place for migratory shorebirds, gulls, and terns to feed and live. Woodpekcers, owls, warblers, and other wintering or migrant landbirds live in the hardwood hammocks. The middle and lower Keys are excellent to watch the fall hawk migration.
